MOWIT Electrical Wire A Light Workday A Success
Opportunity to learn about the trade shared with community
On June 8, 2019, MOWIT held it’s first ever Electrical Workday in partnership with IBEW Local 1 and J West Electric. MOWIT Workdays are planned events at the MOWIT office where journey level tradeswomen perform building upgrades and invite in the community to learn more about that particular work type, and how to enter that union. These days also offer skills to apprentices who may learn more about the work being performed. Sabrina Westfall, owner of J West Electric and Journey Level IBEW 1 Wireman, volunteered her time as the Event Foreman. She organized the materials needed, the volunteers, and provided tools from her company. The project included replacing old fluorescent lights through the hallways and upgrading them to LED fixtures.
In attendance was 4 women who are interested in becoming electricians, 6 IBEW 1 members, and 5 other volunteers participated. The women were able to help with the light replacements, while talking with their Electrician volunteers about how to enter Local 1. By the end of June, 3 of the women had applied to the Local. The Labor Tribune did a story on the event which can be found here:
Lunch was donated by Paric, and the supplies were donated by Paynecrest Electric and Frost Electrical Supply. A huge thank you goes out to the event sponsors, as well as our “Forewoman” and Event Leader Sabrina Westfall!
